Abrasive Flow Machining (AFM) is a precision finishing process that uses a viscous abrasive medium to deburr, polish, and improve surface quality in complex internal geometries. The process involves the following steps:Workpiece Preparation: The part is securely clamped in a fixture, ensuring proper alignment for abrasive flow. Critical edges and passages are targeted.Abrasive Medium Selection: A semi-solid polymer-based medium, mixed with abrasive particles (silicon carbide, diamond, or alumina), is chosen based on material hardness and desired finish.Medium Extrusion: Hydraulic or mechanical pistons push the abrasive medium back and forth through the workpiece. The medium flows along edges, holes, and cavities, removing burrs and smoothing surfaces via shear forces.Process Control: Parameters like pressure, flow rate, and cycle count are adjusted to achieve the required surface finish (Ra value) without damaging the part.Cleaning & Inspection: After processing, the part is cleaned to remove residual media, followed by quality checks for burr removal, edge radiusing, and surface uniformity.
AFM is ideal for aerospace, automotive, and medical components, offering consistent, high-precision finishing for intricate parts like fuel injectors, turbine blades, and molds. The machine equipped with a hydraulic cylinder, pumps the abrasive fluid up and down through the part to be processed to achieve polishing on the surface through an inner hole, burring and chamfering. Mirror surfis achieved by the circulating polishing fluid and isespecially suitable for concave and convex surfaces and complex curved channels. Most suitable for gas and liquid fluid conduction tube. The method effectively improves the performance of the die or workpiece and achieves a bright and clean surface, the processed surface roughness can reach Ra0.025~Ra0.01microns.
The technology of the one way AFM is designed for plastic injection moulds, hot nozzle, hot runner, long tube and bent pipe products. The PLC can control the polishing automatically to economically improve the polishing effects. This process is suitable for concave and convex surfaces, curved channels, irregular shape and micro holes and can meet any other complex shapes,ln order to meet customer demand we are not only providing the abrasive flow machines, but also provide services for customers who need polishing of hot runner systems, we can decrease the roughness in a few minutes and achieve a level of Ra<0.01 microns.
